Sailing Sweden

Sweden

The city of Stockholm is spread across 14 beautiful islands, rich in Nordic culture and history. Stroll the narrow, cobbled streets of the old town and discover its mansions and architecture. Stockholm is also home to many museums, art galleries, and over a thousand restaurants.

Stockholm’s vast archipelago in the Baltic Sea has around 30,000 granite islands to explore, with many secluded coves and uninhabited islets. Islands closest to the mainland are more fertile and forested, while the outer islands have a more exposed rugged appearance.

The archipelago’s extensive cruising grounds extends to Arholma in the north, while in the south you can visit as far south as the town of Gryt. Voyaging to the east through the last islands of the archipelago, you enter the open water of the Baltic Sea. You can also sail inland to the west of Stockholm, after passing through the locks in the city, and visit the large Lake of Märlaren.

For sailing Sweden, you’ll need a sailing license recognized by the local port authorities. Or you can hire a skipper. Read our guide to sailing qualifications for more information.

Things to do in Stockholm

Sweden happy couple sailing yacht charter

Visit the Salt Sea baths

Saltsjöbaden (the salt sea baths) is a relatively small town just a 20-minute drive from Stockholm city. This beautiful outdoor bath lies on the shores of Baggensfjärden and is surrounded by forest to the west, making it well worth a visit if you’re sailing in Sweden. For an entrance fee, you can enjoy the bath, sun terraces and sauna, followed by a visit to the family-friendly beach and lunch on the deck overlooking the water.

Visit the harbor at Sandhamn

Sailors have made their way to Sandhamn since ancient times, and today it is still one of the archipelago’s most visited destinations, as well as being one of the top things to do in Stockholm. The harbor has many cafés, restaurants, shops and bakeries. There is also a beach called Trouville on the southeast part of the island.

Dine at the restaurants on Utö

Utö is one of the largest islands and is very popular – offering a great variety of year round activities. Several restaurants are close to the harbor and offer delicious local specialties. Visitors may walk or hire bikes to tour the island and see its famous windmills.

Enjoy swimming at Grinda

The island of Grinda is a nature reserve, with several good places for swimming and lovely lookout points. Enjoy a day of tranquility, followed by a sunset gourmet dinner at the famed bistro, Framfickan.

Sail to the resort of Dalarö

One of the most popular things to do in Stockholm is to visit Dalarö. Its popularity stems back to the 1800s, when it became a seaside resort for Stockholm socialites. If your timing is good, you may find an art exhibit or music festival to attend during the summer. Near Dalarö are some of the world’s best preserved shipwrecks, and a number of wreck dive guides are available to show the way.

7-day itinerary Stockholm

Day 1: Napoleon viken 6nm

Napoleon viken is a short 6nm sail from the marina. Drop anchor and sway, or moor Swedish style with bow first using the stern anchor. This is a popular bay for weekend sailors, where you can enjoy the well-protected bay and evening sun. Mind the rock on the way in through the channel!

Day 2: Bullerö 15nm

Head on a 15NM sail to lovely Bullerön – the Bullerö archipelago alone includes 900 islands! This beautiful island has interesting footpaths, a sauna and a museum which was the artist Bruno Liljefors’ old hunting house. The bay is protected for winds from NW to E. If winds are from the south, head towards Nämdö and the northern bay Skärvassa where you also find a sauna. In Nämdö, there is a supermarket and a restaurant.

Day 3: Sandhamn 7.5nm

Head for the hustle and bustle in Sandhamn, a famous sailing spot with many restaurants, shops, a bakery and things to see. Don´t miss the loveliest beach in the archipelago, Trouville, on the southeast part of the island.

Day 4: Möja 10nm

Around Möja you can pick a charming, natural harbor, like one on the island of Ostholmen, or head for the guest harbor on Möja to visit the restaurants and supermarket.

Day 5: Gällnö 11nm

Anchor in the bay of Hemfladen and visit one of the best-preserved island villages in the archipelago. There is a newly opened restaurant if you fancy a meal out. If you want more restaurants, shops and a guest harbor, sail further to Grinda.

Day 6: Stockholm Djurgården 21nm

Don´t miss the opportunity to stay a night at the royal island Djurgården, close to downtown Stockholm. Visit the Vasa museum, Skansen, the ABBA museum or Gröna Lund and enjoy dinner at one of the city’s many restaurants.

Day 7: Saltsjöbaden

You will most certainly enjoy the lovely cruise from Stockholm out to Saltsjöbaden. Pass through the narrow Baggensstäket, where Sweden’s last battle took place 1719 – both the Russians and Swedes thought they won! We advise that you tune in and listen carefully on the VHF when you enter the channel. You don’t want to meet one of Waxholmsbolagets cruising boats at the wrong place in this narrow sound.

7-day itinerary Stockholm – alternative

Day 3: Sandhamn’s famous sailing spot

There are many restaurants, shops, bakeries, and a lot to see. Try Trouville beach on the southeast part of the island.

What an AMAZING experience. We’ve just returned from a week long skippered charter from Corfu, sailing around the beautiful islands of the Ionian. Paxos, Antipaxos and Corfu Old Town were beautiful and the secluded bays we had the pleasure of visiting thanks to our local skipper, Nicholas, were simply overwhelming. Fly and flops are no longer for us – we’ll be chartering with DYC for the foreseeable future.

David

Our group of 10 had an AMAZING time in French Polynesia from May 21-28, 2022! The food was amazing, our captain and chef, husband and wife: Henry and Mehee (sp), were incredible and the whole experience on board was a dream! We can’t wait to book another trip through DYC

I’m currently in the Maldives and having the time of my life. Captain Jack and the crew are professional, safe and FUN! The boat is immaculate and the food is delicious. He even makes CAKE! The beds are surprisingly comfortable and we are all sleeping 9 hours a night. If you like island hopping, there is no other better option than Dream Yacht Charter. We will be booking Tahiti next year.

The new boat was in fabulous shape. We had the greatest possible experience exploring archipelago waterways and islands. I could never imagine this might be so much fun and joy and we are already looking forward for the another upcoming trip in Ionian.

Baja is my favorite place now. There was something for everyone: sailed under northerlies with mostly calm evenings, snorkeled, fished, bummed it on the sandy beaches, enchanted by pelicans feeding, greeted by the barking sea lions and explored the Ispiritu Santo island geology. DYC La Paz base provided competent professional support with a well provisioned and maintained boat. We were nourished well by an onboard cook arranged with DYC freeing us all for more play. A vacation and an adventure connected with nature.
