Sailing inspiration: discovering Croatia from our base in Šibenik

Croatia

If  you’re considering going on a yacht charter, Šibenik, in Croatia, is one of our most popular bases. During the summer months, it offers perfect line of sight navigation and calm seas, ideal for those looking to build on their sailing. For the more advanced, thrill seeking sailors out there, winter and spring charters are coupled with likely Mistral winds for an exhilarating sailing experience.

The oldest native Croatian town in the eastern Adriatic, Šibenik lies on the Dalmatian coast of Croatia, surrounded by the cobalt seas of the ocean. Known as the gateway to the Kornati Islands, it offers sailors an excellent starting point to explore some of 140 uninhabited islets along with the inhabited islands of the Šibenik archipelago including Prvic and Zlarin.

Before setting sail, head into the old town of Šibenik for a real taste of history and architecture. Visit the UNESCO World Heritage Cathedral of St. James with its triple nave basilica and take a trip to Krka National Park where you’ll see magnificent waterfalls surrounded by lush flora and fauna and wildlife darting playfully around their natural habitat.

Once onboard, you’ll be spoilt for choice with so many island hopping options available, so we’ve pulled together a list of our top islands accessible from Šibenik to help you plan the perfect itinerary.

Zlarin

The third largest island in the Šibenik archipelago, Zlarin is located approximately 6km from Šibenik itself. Famous for its red corals, the island is a great place for snorkelling and scuba diving along its 11km of beautiful coastline. Head there in the summer months and you may be lucky enough to witness the ceremony of the corals, where locals gather to wish the sailors collecting them good luck and prosperity.

Zmajan

One of the uninhabited islands, Zmajen is west of Zlarin and is a place of utter serenity. What the island lacks in provisions it makes up for in beauty. Moor off the shoreline and spend the day exploring the underwater world, where hundreds of species of fish swim majestically through the quiet waters. Due to its quiet nature, it is also a great place to undertake some watersports, perhaps kayaking to the beaches and exploring the untouched greenery that blooms over the island’s landscapes.

Obanjan

A spellbinding island of extreme natural beauty, Obanjan is a private island located south of Zmajan. Its 136 acres are covered in rich green pine trees where untouched forests act as homes to hundreds of species of wildlife. The island is for adults only and is the perfect retreat for a day of pampering and relaxing. Book yourself in for an alfresco massage, relax on the beach listening to the waves as they elegantly kiss the sand or explore the island itself with a hike into the forests. This island is one not to miss.

Tijat

Another uninhabited island lying to the west of Prvic, Tijat offers perfect sheltered anchorage at Luka Tijascica, making it popular with sailors seeking overnight mooring. There is a small restaurant close to the the anchorage offering local Croatian cuisine. Step back onboard and enjoy a spot of snorkeling and scuba diving before watching the sunset from deck.

Prvic

A mile from Šibenik, Prvic is one of the more populated islands and is popular among tourists looking for a traditional island experience. The island has no cars on it, except for one fire truck, so pollution is minimal and noise limited. Head to one of the two Roman Catholic churches in the village of Sepurine to see architecture dating back to medieval times and visit some of the the Baroque style summer houses before enjoying lunch at one of the small restaurants that line the shore.
